  • right hand?

A random and interesting thought the other day when I couldn't sleep. I wondered why our right hand is called the "right" hand? Then I thought about how in earlier times in history, people who were left handed were forced to learn to use their right hands and I don't remember why exactly. Is our right hand called the "right" hand because somewhere along the way someone said this hand was "right?" I remember hearing that people in medieval times thought that left handed people were monsters or possessed by the devil or something like that.

can any linguistics or history majors help with this question?

I'm neither a linguist or a history major... but I am left handed... as are you =).  They say that left handed people are the ones great enough to overcome right handed-ness...
