Socks and Sandals..=P
So it's summer now and people are starting to bust out the sandals especially when it is 30 plus outside in the sun. The other day I was casually wearing my sandals with my foot socks. My friend sends me a text message later about how it is a cardinal rule that sandals and socks are a complete turn off for any girl out there. My first thought was that is the stupidest cardinal rule I have ever heard.
The one thing I have a problem with is in a social setting is how the heck is a guy like me suppose to automatically pick up on such a minute detail such as "socks and sandals" and who the heck dictates these rules? My cynical side says it's the fashion industry who says so just so they can make lots of money. Plus, if a girl is just going to judge me on my looks then she's probably not the girl for me the first place. What fair warning do I get if this "rule" is a "cardinal rule"? You see, this is why I cringe when I catch a glimpse of show like "What not to Wear" and I immediately change the channel. Heck, I rather watch Jon & Kate Plus 8 than those two hosts blabbing off about fashion like a picky child's eating habits. Why does everyone HAVE to look a certain way? A part of me also asks how much of these "fashion rules" are dictated by media and us trying to chase after the unrealistic movie star look. Afterall, who really cares about looks years down the road when we're all old, fat and ugly and in a nursing home or hospital maybe.
At the same time, I again appreciate my friend for pointing it out to me. And it is probably in my best interest to listen to my friend since I am single. I just hate the feeling of doing something stupid without knowing it and then getting judged for it. I guess its that reason that I rather not care much about looks because I feel like certain outcasts are so unfairly judged because of their appearance. And all these fashion rules are just an outward appearance that really says nothing about the inner beauty that God tries remind us about over and over again about.
But...
How true is that? Appearance does count for something but it never counts for everything. (except for being America's Top Model.) It has been an ongoing debate in my mind. While I look for a girl who's got inner beauty, I am a guy and I have to admit, it is awfully hard to exclusively look at a personality. So I'd be hypocritical if I said to throw appearances out the window.
Here's a scenarios that's going through my mind right now: Let's say I dare someone to nominate me to go on “What not to Wear” and get my wardrobe changed. I'd just like to see what they'd have to say. I spark a debate and maybe actually find out why looks matter. All in the process of getting my 15 minutes of fame. (hey, at least I'm honest about it). There are many interesting possibilities with this scenario.
As for whether looks matter or no,. I don't really know where I stand. So far I realize that there is at least some guideline that people should follow look a certain way for practical reasons. At the same time, how much of these fashion rules are really just bogus efforts by fashion companies and our sinful natures to try to look like movie stars?
Anyways, I'm watching CNN right now and seeing the stuff that's happening in Iran with the election fallout. Now I realize it'd be silly of me to talk about fashion when I know there's a significant crisis in the middle east. So, I think as people who are living comfortable lives and can actually afford to watch CNN should keep the people of Iran in our prayers.

Canucks bandwagon?
So its playoff time and I thought I'd write a hockey blog today.
Before I say anything, I really don't want to offend any Canucks fan out there and I just want to type down my honest opinion like a respectable human being.
That being said, most of you know that I am NOT a Canucks fan even though I live in Vancouver. Don't get my wrong, I grew up being a Canucks fan and I still cherish the memories of seeing them in the finals in 1994 and collecting hockey cards of Alexander Mogilny, Kirk McLean, and others. In addition, I've also enjoyed the sheer amusment of seeing Donald Brasheer get into countless fights. Plus there were other great times watching playoff games while I was on one of my high school band trips. So the question is what made me stop being a Canucks fan? Apart from the countless disappointing seasons. there are a number of reasons. I started to ask myself, why am I practically worshipping a team that a. hasn't won a Stanley Cup b. has mostly players that aren't really top of the league talent (except Luongo) c. is one of the most inconsistent performing teams I've seen (one moment they lose, the next moment they're suddenly the hottest team out there) and d. is really just a "bandwagon." It is these qualities that I found pretty annoying after a while which left me either watching other sports or cheering for other NHL teams. So here's some elaboration on these points:
a. hasn't won a Stanley Cup
- Honestly, other than 1994 and 1982, there's not much history for me fall back on when the Canucks are losing badly and having a lack lustre season. Everytime the Canucks had a bad season, I found myself always saying "oh we had a good run in 94 wish we could get back to that." Its just not that motivating for me to keep cheering for the Canucks.
b. has mostly players that aren't really top of the league talent (except Luongo)
-This is pretty self explanatory. I think even a die hard Canuck fan would know this. Apart from Sundin and Luongo, I don't think any of the current players are high profile material. Yet what bugs me is that a lot of Canuck fans tend of overrate these players. Let's be honest here, not every Canuck is a superstar player. Besides, Sundin isn't exactly scoring as much as other people hoped he would. Yet he was paid a whack load of money in the hopes that he would.
c. is one of the most inconsistent performing teams I've seen (one moment they lose, the next moment they're suddenly the hottest team out there)
-Do I need to remind everyone that last year the Canucks completely melted down and didn't even make the playoffs? and the other times when we're knocked out of the first or second rounds? Yeah, I got tired of it. Besides, even though they are performing well now, I'm not taking any chances by getting my hopes up by setting myself up for disappointment if they lose.
d. is really just a "bandwagon."
-I find it kind of odd that the fan base is called the "Canucks Bandwagon" and Canuck fans seem okay with it. To me, "bandwagon" is a negative connotation because it just highlights that when Canucks are losing, practically NOBODY is cheering for them (except for die hards). I was volunteering at GM place when I was in high school, and there were some games where it almost felt like an away game because the Canucks were losing that badly back then. So, I respect die hard Canuck fans who are willing cheer for their team even when they lose.
Hence, I am not willing be a die hard Canuck fan. Unless they somehow give me a good reason to cheer for them.
Again, I do not want to offend any Canuck fans. This is just entertainment and every fan is entitled to cheer for their favourite team. My favourite team just happens to not be the home team. Yes, I am very sad that the Habs Centennial season has been cut to an ugly short ending. But with all the rich history of Stanley Cups, great players and the upside in the current players in Montreal, it is just a team that I don't mind cheering for even when they lost as badly as they did this season.

...tossing a stone and going for the plunge...
So today I enjoyed seeing some fellow brothers and sisters in Christ make their public declaration of faith. It moved me incredibly. It amazes me how God can move so many of us to support our friends that we may only barely know and we still feel happy about it. At least that's how I felt. It happens rarely that I find tremendous joy in seeing other people receive Grace. Maybe it is a sign that God is maturing me and I am getting something accomplished each day I walk with Him.
I guess it was seeing other people getting baptized that reminded me of my own baptism that happened 4 years ago. (At least from my calculations at the moment at 2:30am. =P) One thing particularly reminded me of my baptism today. It was one of the brothers who confessed before the crowd that he struggled with pornography. When I heard that, I was almost jumping for joy! Because I did the same thing when I got baptized and now I don't have to feel like I'm the only one that did that openly to a lot of people. It still gives me goosebumps to this day and I'm practically shaking as I'm typing this up. Since then I haven't really talked as openly as I wanted to about the issue. It is the most awkward and embarrassing issue but it is one of the many challenges facing our Church today. Often I feel if I speak too openly about it people will just feel uncomfortable around me. So I REALLY commend and praise any brother who can openly talk about it freely. I guess what I've found that I just have to reveal it at appropriate times as opposed to talking about it so openly. Although, with the way society is today. Maybe I do have to talk about it more openly.
Now I'm going to be brutally honest about my opinion here and I confess I do that for attention but this is important here for many people and I know I can build up the Church in some way by doing this. I was reading a revelife post on masturbation the other day and it saddened me to hear that so many Christians still think that its okay to masturbate. Don't get me wrong, lust is the sin here and I know that masturbation is not specifically mentioned in the Bible. But can you honestly say that a full-grown person who's gone through puberty can masturbate, clean up the mess afterwards, and not lust? Gimme a break! You can seriously make another brother/sister stumble if you subscribe to that opinion.
Ephesians 5:3 pretty much says is all:
"But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people." - Ephesians 5:3
One of my ETS verses also sticks in my head on this topic which is 1 Corinthians 10:13. This was also the verse that my fellow brother in Christ used today in his testimony which me jump even more for joy inside:
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13
Now that I've gone fully exposed on this issue again, I want to take this opportunity to praise the Lord for every single brother and sister who has gone through with this struggle and can openly share about it to others because I know from personal experience that it takes a lot courage to do so. To my other brothers and sisters, a little encouragement might help. Like I said already, the moment we talk about it, it all starts feeling incredibly awkward and we should be rejoicing that God is working through us.
With sexual images in the media today, we should never ever give up the fight against sexual immorality. So keep fighting on brothers and sisters.
Here are some good sites I'd recommend if any of you out there need help:

I write therefore I am...
Ever since I've bene caught up in discussions and other battles of words, I always desired to have a position of verious issues that every Christian should have a position on. I feel like I'm not giving God a good representation if I don't put up a good fight to any aetheist out there. Unfortunately, I am a sinful being and there are many arguments that I have to say that I don't have an answer to. Intellectual defenses have never been my strong point. But God gave me a mind to do something. So I might as well use it as much as I can.
So our small group has been going through Romans 9 and every time the question about Predestination vs Armenianism (or Free Will as most people know it as) comes up, I say that its going to be a while till the night is over. But if there was one chapter to bring it up, it would be Romans 9. So we talked and talked till we finally came to the conclusion that God is sovereign and that no matter how much we think try to think through everything, we are all like Job in that we were never there at the beginning of time and space when everything was created and that to try to understand everything is beyond our reach. Whether it is Armenianism or Predestination, the approach is still the same. Be a disciple of Christ and make disciples of all nations. Besides, to my knowledge, I don't think it necessarily has to be exclusively free-will or exclusively predestination. I think they both exist in their own forms to complement each other. Exactly how they complement each other, I haven't read enough to know what I'm talking about yet. All I know is that I think God definitely chooses certain people to be saved and lead a great and holy lives and that he does give us free-will out of love so that there is a chance that others who were not chosen to make the right choice. You can point out whatever flaws I have in that argument but either way we all end up with the same objective which is that is to glorify God with all our hearts.
Now the other debate I'm thinking about is the creation vs evolution debate. I've been listening to John MacArthur's Theology of Creation Sermon. After listening to that, it is starting to make sense that to take the account in Genesis 1 as a literal 7 days of creation. To have any other position on it would just take away from the supernatural wonder of Creation. One may try to put all these scientific evolutionary arguments on it but even evolution has its own holes like where the heck is the animal between the short necked version of the giraffe and the giraffe we know today? Also, if we actually whole heartedly bought into the ideology of evolution, the world would be a very scary place. Remember when we learned in school about survival of the fittest and natural selection? I guess it was scary when the whole eugenics movement developed in Nazi Germany where people with mental disabilities and other "undesirable" traits were systematically eliminated from society. Obviously we're smarter than that now. But why is it that so many people still buy into evolution? I guess not many people necessarily equate eugenics with evolution but it is a scary thought. And by the way, I refuse to believe that my work with autistics kids is useless according to evolutionary theory. But like the salvation camps, whether God created us through Creation or Evolution (assuming that you believe that God created us either way), the result is still the same. We're here, and we have a whole world to see, hear and smell and we're alive.

right hand?
A random and interesting thought the other day when I couldn't sleep. I wondered why our right hand is called the "right" hand? Then I thought about how in earlier times in history, people who were left handed were forced to learn to use their right hands and I don't remember why exactly. Is our right hand called the "right" hand because somewhere along the way someone said this hand was "right?" I remember hearing that people in medieval times thought that left handed people were monsters or possessed by the devil or something like that.
can any linguistics or history majors help with this question?
